The theme for this year's Black History Month celebration is taken from the title of a book by Bill Overton, the keynote speaker at FSU's Black History Month Kick-Off event Tuesday, February 4, 2003. Mr. Overton's The Media Shaping the Image of a People in a film framebook examines the ways in which popular newsmagazines portrayed African Americans and other minorities during the nineteenth century. It also includes more recent images as well as thought-provoking texts from important image-makers.
