The theme for this year's Black History
Month celebration is taken from the title of a book by Bill Overton,
the keynote speaker at FSU's Black History Month Kick-Off event
Tuesday, February 4, 2003. Mr. Overton's
book
examines the ways in which popular newsmagazines portrayed African
Americans and other minorities during the nineteenth century. It also
includes more recent images as well as thought-provoking texts from
important image-makers.
